What is Grief

The Experience of Grief

Each person grieves in a unique and individual way. No one can tell another how to grieve or how long to grieve. There is no formula for bereavement and no timetable. Expectations of this kind can add shame to grief. Grief may stop and start again. There may be no apparent reason for its return. Grieving includes mourning all of the changes that occur because of the loss of the individual. Peace and comfort can come from sharing grief with trusted people and others who have experienced loss.

Expressions of Grief may include:
  • Feelings of shock, disorientation and confusion
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Misplacing things
  • Loneliness, depression, and bouts of crying
  • Fatigue and sleep disturbance
  • Changes to appetite
  • Irritability and desire for solitude
  • Waves of emotion
  • Feelings of anger or guilt
  • Worry about the future
  • Headaches, muscle tension
  • Gastrointestinal distress
  • Dreaming about or sensing the presence of the deceased
